Murals have to be one of the coolest investments to buy, especially if you have a great experience and relationship with your artist. One thing to consider is what do you want the mural for? is it for aesthetics, to make the place look good, is it as a memorial mural to celebrate your achievements, your life, or a loved one. All these factors and more can help shape the direction to the final product.
Inspiration: as water is to a fish, inspiration is paramount to get the mural your heart desires, this will be a road map for the artist to get a clear understanding of what you want. Places to look for inspiration are: pinterest, google images, deviant art, istock photos, stocksy, and other image based websites. You can also visit your local news agency and pick up a magazine, frankie is a good one ( australia ) national geographic just to name a few.
The wall: "i don't see walls, I see opportunity" - Pat Indo
One of the best ways to see what artwork will look best is to know which wall its going on. I know this sounds comical, and the truth is, the wall will dictate the artwork. for example, if the wall is in a dark lit space, it would be counter productive to put a dark coloured portrait. if the wall is facing the garden and window, maybe the theme could be nature inspired, bringing the elements outside indoors. If the wall is facing a particular direction, East, south, north, west, the colours that correspond to the direction, will naturally give the space a powerful energy, thats up lifting and fills the space with positive energy.
Directions: these are the Lakota tribe directional colours. North \ white | East \ Red | South \ Yellow | West \ Black. Now takes these like a grain of salt. You can have the background colour start with red, then it moves into pinks, yellows, purples, golds, greens, lime greens, and so on. To have an element of these colours, with the intention, is enough to keep the flow of energy.
Energy: Why is energy important? Energy is all around us, no matter what you believe, energy is what makes the world around us. Nikola Tesla was a great example of energy being all round us, he broke it down into AC \ DC currents. Tesla tapped into the energy thats all around us, the free energy that powers the trees, gives life force to everything including you and me. what flows from here is photosynthesis, then solar energy and back to the sun. When you feel unwell, get into the sun, the sun will revitalise you, take a swim in the ocean, this will reboot your whole body, this is energy. When creating a mural, keep this in mind, do I want to revitalise my state and uplift my house and self image? Yes, self image comes from energy, if your house is dirty and unclean, it will impact on your moods and feelings. Another great example is a japanese scientist called Masaru Emoto. He claimed that the human mind could effect the molecular structure of water. He froze water, and before puting it into the fridge, he wrote "love" on one, and "Hate" on the other. After freezing the water, he placed the samples under the microscope and saw two completely different shapes. The hate was all distorted and disfigured, the love sample was perfect, with mesmerising crystals. heres a video:
Future: Fashion is a representation of 40 years ago brought forward into the future, and is now trendy, to me this is a bad place to get inspiration, for the soul reason, it will be dates in 2 - 5 years time. To create art that will stay strong and stand the test of time, is to create art that is true to you, has meaning, or is inspired by something you love. what I'm saying is avoid following trends, especially from pinterest and instagram. And if you love whats trendy, thats cool, just ask the artist to tweek it so its original, and has its own element of originality.
Hope this inspires you to start researching your future mural. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
